On Saturday, I went to the Apollo Theatre in NYC to pay tribute to Michael Jackson, along with hundreds of other fans who were there celebrating his music. I also bumped into Spike Spike Lee who directed Michael in They Don’t Care About Us music video. Michael truly united cultures - from black to white, young and old - they were to commemorate him. Although Michael’s death has been sad and shocking to millions, he will be remembered forever. Here is Beauty and the East TV’s tribute video to the King of Pop.

I met Yousuf and Saima Arain at a fashion show I was part of at the W Hotel in NYC in 2008. I was immediately struck by their mutual talents. Yousuf is a member of the band Kundalini Shock Attack , a self described “desi post-dancefloor deconstructionalism” band and Saima is a professional artist who has featured her work at galleries in New York City. If you like the sounds of Depeche Mode-New Order-Chemical Brothers as much as the sounds of tabla infused Desi vocals, you will get a kick out of their album. My favorites are “Pyar Bhara Zamana”, “Din Ka Rishta” and “Aaghosh”.
In this original Beauty and the East episode, I interview this creative duo about their work and how they deal with Muslim stereotypes in the U.S.

Beauty and the East TV interviews Dr. Massouda Jalal, a brave and heroic woman who ran for President in Afghanistan’s first democratic elections in 2004. She discusses why she decided to run, the challenges Afghan women face, and why the upcoming elections in Afghanistan are so important for the international community to be concerned about. The interview was conducted in New York City when Dr. Jalal visited the States to promote “FrontRunner”, a documentary about her 2004 campaign.

She’s talented. She’s fun. She has an amazing voice. She’s Afghan-American. She’s Zohra. Zohra grew up knowing that one day she would become a musician. She started singing at a young age, and in high school learned how to play the guitar. Although her conservative Afghan parents tried to encourage her to pursue a traditional career, music was in her blood. She moved to New York City in 2003 to finish college, and to follow her dreams of becoming a singer and songwriter. After a stint at CITY Magazine writing music reviews, Zohra moved to Brooklyn and decided to “take her dreams by the scruff of the neck” and record an album. Her band, Religious to Damn, is described as a “span between the flames and the transcendence”, and mixes Eastern influences with alternative rock. Today, she is working with Jim Sclavunos from Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, and Warren Defever of His Name Is Alive on her new album.
In Beauty and the East TV’s FIRST original episode, Zohra talks about her music career and the challenges of being a Muslim-Afghan-American musician living in two cultures. She also performs her hit single Falls Down Again.
