Fashioning Islam in America: Nzinga Knight

Posted by BeautyandtheEast on 12-02-2009 | Comments | Share | Filed under: Fashion-Eastas, Fashion

A graduate of Pratt Institute, CFDA award winner and 2008 BAC grant recipient, Muslim American designer Nzinga Knight has designed a line of evening wear that utilizes couture techniques to create a synergy between the Islamic dress code of modesty and American high-fashion style.

Watch her on “New York Viewpoint” (her segment starts at 2:30):

Barbie Burqa & Fox News

Posted by BeautyandtheEast on 11-23-2009 | Comments | Share | Filed under: Entertainment, Fashion-Eastas, Fashion

Barbie is all set for a traditional makeover – the doll will don a burqa for a charity auction.  The much-adored Barbie will be auctioned in the traditional Islamic dress for Sotheby’s Save the Children charity.  Over 500 dolls were displayed in Florence, Italy, as part of the celebrations of Barbie’s 50th anniversary this year. Manufacturer Mattel is believed to be supportive of the exhibit, partly the creation of Italian designer Eliana Lorena.  “I know Barbie was something seen as bad before as an image for girls, but in actual fact the message with Barbie for women is you can be whatever you want to be,” Fox News quoted Lorena, as telling the Daily Mail.

Seems like the folks at Fox News aren’t happy about it:

2009 Emmy Awards Fashions - Tube Tops Galore

Posted by BeautyandtheEast on 09-21-2009 | Comments | Share | Filed under: Fashion-Eastas, Fashion

Was it me or was this year’s Emmy fashions snooze-worthy?  I was bored during Fashion Week in NYC as well, but last night’s Emmy Awards took the cake.  Maybe it had to do with the fact that most of the dresses were tube top designs, resulting in flattened chests that made their way to the armpits.  Presenters need to keep in mind that when they are TV, we focus on the shoulder up, so they should wear something that has a bit of pizazz.  I did see a few frocks that caught my eye although none made their way to the stage.  Here are my top picks:

Paris in Dubai!

Posted by BeautyandtheEast on 06-23-2009 | Comments | Share | Filed under: Fashion-Eastas, Fashion

I’m not a fan of Paris Hilton but I do find it interesting that she is in Dubai filming her show (BFF?).  Sorry, don’t watch it but it’s all the talk in Dubai these days.  I found this video of her to be hilarious.  She is sitting next to a Sheikh giggling about her “best friends foreeverrrrrr” show in her Minnie-Mouse voice, and how she “respects the culture and traditions” in Dubai and won’t be doing anything, well, basically, debaucherous?  Even funnier is he keeps looking at her and grinning.  Definitely a “West meets East” moment to remember. ; )

Although I do admit to liking her mint green Grecian dress….. perfect for a Nikah (sans the warrior headpiece and tassles hanging from the bodice area as it makes the outfit look a bit costume-y and forced).  Okay, so I’ll give it to her for at least trying, and to the Emiratis for knowing how to attract press!

Nicole Richie’s Afghan Inspired Bag

Posted by BeautyandtheEast on 06-23-2009 | Comments | Share | Filed under: Fashion-Eastas, Fashion

Speaking of Paris, her former BFF Nicole Richie was spotted around LA recently (with her cutie-pie Harlow) carrying an Afghan-looking hobo bag.  I have to admit, Nicole does wear some very cute pieces.  Like her bohemian style?  Get the look at Artizan Sarai!  http://www.artizansarai.com/scat.asp?c=AC&sc=HA

Fashion-Easta Alert: Designer Brooke Samad

Posted by BeautyandtheEast on 05-25-2009 | Comments | Share | Filed under: Fashion-Eastas, Fashion

Brooke Samad, an Italian-Jewish convert to Islam, created Marabo in 2006, a fashion label that caters to Muslim-American women.  She studied politics at NYU to make her parents happy (sound familiar?) before attending F.I.T in New York City.  Her clothing line is geared toward Muslim women like herself who’ve had a difficult time finding suitable clothing.  Watching this video reminds me of my days starting out as a designer and running around the Garment District.  Fashion is one of the most difficult industries to break into and to find your identity and customers. Definitely not an easy career to launch, I tell you, so kudos to independent designers who are brave enough to try!
