Daily Show’s Best Brown News Guy - Aasif Mandvi

You may recognize him from his regular stint on John Stewart’s The Daily Show or as the disgruntled office employee in Sandra Bullock’s The Proposal.  Actor/comedian Aasif Mandvi was born in India to a Muslim family before moving to England then Tampa, Florida when he was 16 years old.  After studying theatre at the University of South Florida, he moved to New York City where he began appearing in off-Broadway productions. He won an Obie Award for his critically acclaimed one-man show Sakina’s Restaurant

He has since appeared on ER, The Sopranos, Sex and the City, CSI, Oz, Ed, The Bedford Diaries, Jericho, Sleeper Cell, Law & Order, and the Daily Show.  His film credits include The Siege, Die Hard with a Vengeance, Analyze This, Ghost Town, and M. Night Shyamalan’s upcoming film The Last Airbender.

As a Daily Show correspondent, he not only reports on brown people, he talks to them:

Funny Lady Shazia Mirza

She was named “one of the 50 funniest acts in British comedy” in 2003.  In April 2007, Shazia Mirza presented a documentary on BBC Three called F*** Off, I’m a Hairy Woman and was a semi-finalist on Last Comic Standing season 6.  In March 2009, she was listed on the inaugural Muslim Women’s Power List as one of the 20 most successful Muslim women in the UK.

Indian-American Comedian: Aman Ali

Aman Ali is an Indian-American standup comedian who is not afraid to speak his mind.  Born and raised in Columbus, Ohio, Ali is only 23 years old and a regular standup comic in comedy clubs all across the country. He’s opened for Dave Chappelle and a handful of other acclaimed comics working in the industry today.

Ali started off his career as a Capitol Hill journalist in Washington D.C. and is on-air personality for WRNN-TV in New York. He’s been featured in the New York Times, PBS and MTV for. In 2005, his column, “My So-Called Moderate Life,” about Muslims condemning terrorist attacks they aren’t responsible for, won a national award from the Hearst Journalism Foundation in editorial writing.

Jordanians Can Take A Joke

NYT: AMMAN, Jordan — For all of the animosity, mistrust and lack of understanding between the West and the Muslim world, this small Middle Eastern country has demonstrated that most people here have the capacity to laugh at themselves — and at jokes about bodily functions, too.

When comedians from North America faced a theater packed with Arabs this month and poked fun at the local practice of marrying a cousin, tweaked Palestinians as being skilled stone throwers, feigned fright at an audience member named Osama, everyone laughed, and laughed hard.

When it comes to humor, apparently, there is no clash of civilizations.

“Back at home people ask me, do Arabs laugh?” said Dean Obeidallah, a stand-up comedian originally from New Jersey who was executive producer of the Amman Stand-Up Comedy Festival. “I will be honest, you guys laugh more than Americans.”
